Trends in the global luxury tourism industry

The luxury travel industry has grown at an unprecedented rate in recent years as a result of rising spending power, an expanding middle-class population, emerging luxury trends, and the expansion of luxury hotels. In the past, luxury travellers were content staying in their choice of resort and they rarely ventured beyond their five-star hotels or resorts. The definition of luxury travel has evolved dramatically in recent years, and people now are far more adventurous. They are more interested in experiencing local customs and cuisine. New trends in the luxury tourism industry are emerging from the global shutdown caused by the COVID-19 crisis, ranging from cruising, yachting, and customised private vacations to multigenerational travel.

The luxury tourism market surpassed USD 17 billion in 2021 and is expected to grow at a 15% CAGR from 2022 to 2028. With an increasing number of millennials travelling for sports and recreational activities, the demand for luxury tourism will skyrocket. According to the US Census Bureau data, the adult population aged 18 and up increased to 258.3 million in 2021, accounting for 77.8% of the US population. As per market research in tourism industry the latest trends that are shaping the luxury travel market are as follows:

1. Cruises, yachts, and small ships will be popular - Many people are expected to seek vacations where they can enjoy outdoor spaces, such as safaris, adventure & sports travel, cruising, and yachting, due to an odd belief that people are less likely to contract coronavirus outside than indoors. The cruise, yachting, and small ship segments of the luxury tourism industry are expected to grow significantly in the future. Because of the luxury, privacy, and, most importantly, safety, many travellers prefer customised vacations on cruises and yachts.

2. The growing trend of solo travel - Solo travel, which has been one of the hottest topics in recent years, is rapidly gaining popularity all over the world, particularly in the European region. Smartphones, travel apps, and Wi-Fi have made it easier to navigate and stay in touch. There is an increase in the number of options available for solo travellers, with different income levels ensuring a higher level of luxury tourism benefits to those who can splurge a little more.

3. Social media to influence the millennial luxury tourism sector - The growing use of social media platforms and rapid technological advancements are influencing this generation's awareness of the benefits of luxury travel. Aside from millennials, luxury travel trends are becoming more prevalent among baby boomers, including retired workers and other individuals who prefer to travel. The luxury tourism market from the baby boomer generation is expected to grow by 20% by 2030.

The new challenge for the luxury tourism industry in the post-COVID-19 era is to operate by maintaining social distance and safety practices. The pandemic has changed people's perceptions of luxury tourism, with the most desirable amenities being high cleanliness standards, privacy, and personalised experiences. According to market research in tourism industry, more than 80% of people are willing to travel to destinations during the off-season when it is less crowded. The easing of travel restrictions and the reopening of borders post-COVID pandemic have made travel at all levels more valuable and exotic among people today.
